At our pre-school sessions, the emphasis is on learning through play rather than by formal teaching
The children are introduced to letters, and this is reinforced with games that use pictures, symbols and familiar words. They are helped to recognise their own names which are kept on the covers of their folders. The children are also encouraged to use a pencil to make marks, draw and eventually practice writing their names.
A basic knowledge of numbers, sizes, pattern, shapes and sorting is gradually developed and reinforced through practical counting games and rhymes. Free play activities are available for all children to
explore and experience. Some examples include:
- playdough, sand or painting
- the book corner
- jigsaws, construction materials
- train set, farm, dolls house or cars
- dressing up, playhouse, work bench, kitchen
- computer
Milk or juice and biscuits are
offered for refreshment
during the morning. Children are
encouraged to sit together round
the table and to help give out
cups and biscuits,
promoting responsibility and sharing.
Large equipment is then set out for play
outside, whenever the weather permits, and the
use of the slide, ride-on cars, tricycles and
trampoline allows the development of
Progressive motor skills.
